L’Esprit du Mistral / The Wind Spirit is another concept painting relating to the Mistral wind. The Mistral phenomenon is a weather event that occurs in Provence and is considered to be of local benefit as well as an annoyance. This strong wind is often accompanied by fine weather, but blows with a surprising force and consistency over several days. It has often been ascribed as a cause of madness or, at the very least, it leads to unusually high levels of irritability. I have experienced the constant 30 mph / 50 km/h wind blowing down from the northwest and found it quite unnerving as it never lets up, even though it clears the air. Christine knew it as a recognizable and relatable concept for the local population.
