Harold Waud was another basic commission or as Christine would say, “just putting bread on the table”. Unfortunately we don’t have much of a back story on how the painter and the subject came together, but I suspect that from the short time line and daily sessions that the Wauds were visiting the area for an early summer holiday.

I like the pose and pleasant expression: while traditionally, crossed arms are associated with being defensive and closed off, in this painting the open expression and overall relaxed posture belie that sense. The other unusual aspect to the painting is the size, as typically this sort of two-thirds view would dictate a slightly larger canvas, like the painting of Martin Clayman that Christine had just completed the week before.

Diary Entries

June 24, 19749:30 1st sitting Harold Waud 15P £125. Nice face and sits quietly. I changed to 20P canvas but had proportion trouble. Ironed out after he left 3 hrs then 2hrs pm on smoky background.
June 25, 19749:30 2nd Harold. Went quite well in spite of migraine 2 hrs. Painted below eyes.
June 26, 19749:30 3rd Harold. Rain, too dark for face. Successfully worked on & finished shirt. 2hr with H, 2hr without. 1hr changing Martin C’s paunch.
June 27, 19749:30 4th Harold.  A lot of trouble with mouth and chin. But got it OK 2½hrs & ½hr.
June 28, 19749:30 5th Harold. Subtle work on neck. Went well. Am convinced it’s like him.
June 29, 19746th Harold. 2hrs arms good. Barbara [wife] loved the portrait! Most enthusiastic.
June 30, 19747th Harold 9:45 & FINISHED 2hrs.
July 2, 19741hr background H.
July 3, 1974Worked like mad on finishing touches on both portraits [other portrait Martin Clayman] 3 hrs.. 12pm Portraits to photographer. 6PM Deliver portrait to the Wauds. They gave me more than I asked 500F on top of £125
