This is a portrait of Katie White, who was a very close friend of Christine as they both attended Bournemouth College at the same time in the ’40s. It is a good representation of the “scrub” technique Christine developed after a serious car accident left her with a dislocated shoulder. She found it through happy accident when she was trying to remove oil paint, misapplied due to the injury, and saw the resulting soft staining effect. The very soft edges created by this way of applying and removing the paint really lent itself to the soft and sensual character of the portrait.
Very fittingly, the painting was done as thank-you present to the White family who took care of her in their home while she was recovering from the accident; further details are mentioned in her biography page.
This painting is in marked contrast to an earlier portrait she made of Katie White using her palette knife.
