Clark Gable – The Evening Standard – 1946

Size: 7.5″ x 10″
Date: 1946
Where: Evening Standard, London
Signature: “CHRISTINE”
Currently: Family collection

A drawing of the famous movie star Clark Gable for the movie Adventure. One of the few surviving originals used for illustrations in the London Evening Standard, my mother’s first job as an artist.

Interestingly, the original was drawn as a large 7.5″ x 10″ illustration to to be reproduced as a tiny 1.5″ wide print. I think the original drawing is a faithful rendition of the movie poster but flipped for this location in the newspaper.

I found this illustration in the remains of a portfolio book of her Evening Standard illustrations. I have reproduced it, see below where you can page through the remaining ten pages.. Use the controls at the bottom to move through the pages or zoom in as needed.
