A Quick Sketch of a young girl who I think is the youngest daughter of the neighbors, possibly drawn as a sample to demonstrate what a drawing might look like with a light ochre paper base.
The portrait is an example of using conté crayon on light ochre paper. The shade of yellow is noticeably lighter than the rich ochre color of the paper she often used in England, see Roberta as an example.
While looking through pictures of her other drawings, I could see the similarity between this image and another drawing of a young girl on grey paper. Both of the drawings are showing identical blouses. If you examine them both closely you can see that here my mother has drawn the same subject but at a later date showing a little more age on the the model, recording her with longer hair as well as slightly increasing the length of her neck and adjusting the other proportions of her face. My mother was a very keen observer of how the changes that children’s faces underwent as they grew older.
