The Dancer is an interesting portrait that works to convey the subject matter through the combination of the title and the attitude of the pose. As this was an early work I know very little about it and when presented with two very different and poor photographs of the painting, I was very uncertain of the final colour and contrast of the original so I have decided to include both images, each adjusted to a guestimate of the original taking into account the fading and shifting colors of the photographs. Interestingly one picture is unsigned. I suspect the model is the same as the one she used for Stardust.
As a side note, my mother really wanted to become a dancer in her late teens but an emergency exploratory surgery to deal with what turned out to be a burst appendix “scuppered that” as my mother would say. It’s good she had a strong alternative art practice to fall back on.
