Serenade was inspired by listening to Neil Diamond’s ‘Longfellow Serenade’. I wouldn’t go through the lyrics here but it does include the singer, in the first person, singing and dreaming about their lady love “beside this sleepy glade” “upon the summer night”. Despite the inspiration, I don’t think this is one of my mothers better paintings. While I love the sentiment and the rendition of the night time atmosphere, I have an issue with the proportions and the overly simplistic and generic rendering of the guitar player.

A reading of the diaries tells the story of an inspired beginning followed by many long breaks, including one for two months while recovering from a bad injury to her right hand and wrist. Although, to her credit during this “healing and recovery” time she painted several paintings with her left hand. Also recorded in the diaries (not reproduced here) was a continuing saga of the young family in the flat/apartment below hers. When they first moved in my mother was often disturbed by the noise of the young child and music playing and late night parties by the father, Pascal. My mother befriended them and they came to an agreement on quiet hours. Later my mother had the child, Beatrix, and mother, Agnes, sit for Quo Vadis, a large and complex painting with six figures. Agnes also helped generate some income for herself and my mother by regularly walking around the village and its many restaurants, selling my mothers cards. In the supplemental images you can see Christian striking a pose as a reference for this painting and of course providing his guitar as a subject as well.

Diary Entries

December 13, 1974‘Longfellow Serenade’ has brought new painting to mind! Goodee.
December 23, 1974Tried to start ‘Serenade’ by drawing guitar but tummy pain v. bad.
January 19, 19754hrs on new work ‘Serenade’. Inspired by P.’s art training decided to launch into the much thought about ‘Serenade’ with lots of thin paint and no charcoal drawing but am not impressed with result, and wonder if it will ever come out in my style, or remain a mess only to be scrapped.
January 21, 19751hr background trees ‘Serenade’
January 22, 19753.5 hrs ‘Serenade’ not good work. Strange tension and tummy ache returned. Maybe hassles with painting?
April 4, 1975Framed Barnard. Tried to do sketch for ‘Serande’ – failed.
April 5, 1975Bad right hand with pulled ligaments
July 17, 19752hrs Serenade guitar. Took me quite a time to position the guitar at the right angle to paint in ‘Serenade’. Felt full of life.
July 18, 19752hrs Serenade. Did some more work on the guitar – went quite well – but I’ve chosen the most difficult angle.
July 19, 19751hr Serenade. Did about an hour’s work on Serenade, late after arriving at post office before it was open, my watch was wrong!
July 22, 1975Couldn’t settle too much work but traced off  ‘the Red Turban‘ and the guitar to prepare drawing of girl.
July 28, 19752hrs Serenade. Marvelous what a good night’s sleep does! felt refreshed and remembered a dream idea for a painting – a shadowed face wearing my straw hat. Determinedly & doggedly went back to work on ‘Serenade’ put in strings etc. on guitar and then worked on drawing of girl & it even works – looks as if her curves will fit the curves of the guitar
July 30, 19752hrs Serenade. Worked hard on the guitar girl drawing, but then Margareta and Madame Ojir came. Transferred it to canvas later in the afternoon. Do hope it’s going to work.
July 31, 19752hrs Serenade. Painted figure lying on guitar. I think it will come off. Incredible hot weather for working.
August 1, 19752hrs Serenade finished nude. Went over ‘Serenade’ nude again and am now satisfied with it.
August 4, 1975V. bad work on ‘Serenade’ DEFEATED by heat. Oh dear – what a miserable day in spite of the realization of the need for tolerance, and determination to work. Even after the family below went out and left the dog howling! I tried to work but couldn’t get the sitting man’s figure to go right and was finally defeated by the airless heat.
August 6, 19751½hrs Serenade. Things looking a lot better – got the place tied in organized early – then back to work on the man in ‘Serenade’ – it’s really hard without a model. More painting after Siesta.
August 9, 19753hrs Good work Serenade. Incredibly got stuck into painting and really worked hard for over three hours without a break – on the background of Serenade – it felt so good – the right handed painting does make my wrist ache. The weather was two degrees cooler and that was what made the difference.
August 13, 1975Went to Pandora’s and found her pale with heat and exhaustion tried to help. She’s really keen on starting a boutique when she comes back and has more ideas. She said that my bread & butter was in landscapes!! Never mind that Kathleen Waterstone said they were an embarrassment & to show all my critics of them that they would sell!
September 25, 1975Finish portrait of Francesco Banteruck 26″ x 22″ – 21 hours. Then finished Serenade.
