About

The artist sketching a boy outdoors in front of a large wall on which many of her paintings are hanging.

The purpose of this website is to share the artwork of Christine Benson with the world.  While my admiration for her talent may be colored by a son’s point of view, I think putting it out there and letting others appreciate it has some benefit even if it is only to give me feedback from a larger audience.  As my mother passed on before the age of the internet, the opportunities for her work to be seen by a larger audience than those who lived or passed through the small village of Fayence in the south of France were limited to the few pieces exhibited in nearby Nice and Cannes and very occasionally Paris and London. Additionally, where possible I’ve tried to add a backstory to many of the artworks; these have been created from diaries, sketches and my own personal recollections and observations. I’m hoping that seeing her body of work as a whole, along with the supporting material, will prove educational and helpful for other artists, students of art appreciation and the general public, if so please let me know in the comments.

Completion: I can safely say that this will never cover all of the work she reproduced over her lifetime, but I invite you to check back often as I continue to add images and stories as I find, study, reproduce and write-up new items on a weekly basis.

Images: Every effort has been made to make as faithful a reproduction of the original as possible. However, while I currently have access to some of the artwork and can make high resolution digital photographs, there are far too many pieces where I’m relying on a mix of old professional photographs from the film era and simple snapshots. In many cases I have had to resort to some manipulation in a photo editor to straighten pictures, correct color and remove artifacts. There is no 100% accurate substitute for looking at the original.
