Portrait painting of a very old woman

Media: palette knife and brush, oil paint on canvas
Where: Bournemouth, Dorset, UK
Signature: “Christine Benson”

We always referred to this painting as the “Old Lady” but from Christine’s portfolio I see that it was in fact called “Victoria“, which I assume was the name of the subject. This was a milestone painting in that it was her first painting that was accepted for a major juried exhibition, the Royal Academy Summer Salon in 1961.

Note: I was too young at the time this was painted to know anything about its creation, but I did know that my mother was very pleased with it. She felt that at the time it was painted it was her best work yet. When she moved into her apartment in Fayence, the painting was hung so that it was the first painting any visitors would encounter. I think it sold when she closed her gallery 1993.
