“Colour!” While traditional sumi painting is generally monochromatic, the solid sumi ink blocks can be made in a variety of colors. When ground and diluted with water, the effects can be very subtle compared to the appearance of regular watercolors.

This is clearly a practice painting to see the effects of the very light color washes on top of the solid black outlines.
