Roberta Portrait conté crayon on brown paper

Size: 11″ x 14″ (cropped by matte)
Date: 1969
Media: Conté crayon on ochre paper
Where: Bournemouth, Dorset
Signature: “christine benson ’69”
Currently: White family collection

Roberta was a student of my mothers when she was teaching an “A” level art course at Marydale Convent School, Highcliffe-on-Sea, Hampshire.

The portrait is a fine example of using conté crayon on ochre paper. The ochre paper fills in the tone with the black conté crayon working for the structure and hair while the white conté is lightly added to provide highlights and shape with just a little color added for tone like in the collar. Note that she is wearing her school uniform and tie.

Below is a picture of my mothers business card which was attached to the back of the picture. There is a brief notation in the diary on July 28, 1969 of this being exhibited at Lyndhurst Community Centre, and the price listed as “n.f.s” or not for sale.
