Children of Japan – girl, was painted around the same time as the Children of Thailand pair and it’s easy to see the similarities. When we lived in Japan my mother was fascinated with the elaborate traditional kimonos and outfits worn by the locals for special occasions and festivals. She would often take her 8mm Bolex film camera and filmed them even if her children, the usual subjects for her camera, were not there.
The composition necessarily has the young girl’s body in profile so we can see how the obi is tied with a traditional elaborate bow. I like how the butterfly is color coordinated with the kimono, although I suspect not entomologically correct.
I’m not exactly sure what became of this painting I suspect it was sold, along with the others to a big department store in downtown Bournemouth.
Below are the two paintings of the Children of Thailand series.
